This year’s event features 306 participants – 163 international and 143 domestic runners and walkers. The main events will be held tomorrow, including a 31-kilometre run, walk and relay starting from the National Auditorium, as well as a 10km run and walk from Moana Sands Lagoon. All races will finish at the National Auditorium.

Athletics Cook Islands president Simone Fe’ao said more than 300 participants have registered for the 49th edition of the event, which has become a permanent fixture on the Cook Islands calendar.

“Looking through the registration list, it is great to see so many familiar names who have been returning to our shores for many years to take part, alongside another strong local contingent.”

Fe’ao said their partnership with Destination Management Cook Islands (DMCK) as the main event organiser has also enabled Athletics Cook Islands to use funds raised through the event to support youth athletics development programme each year, “so the benefits of Round Raro extend well beyond race week”.

“A huge meitaki ma’ata to Richard and Karyn Vinsen and Island Car & Bike Hire for coming on board as naming sponsor this year. They have been long-time supporters of Round Raro through both sponsorship and participation. We are also very grateful to all the supporting sponsors and organisations who continue to make the event possible.”

Fe’ao said they are looking forward to seeing everyone out and about over the coming week, enjoying the different events and once again showcasing Rarotonga’s beautiful landscape along the way.

“Next year will be particularly special as we celebrate the 50th Round Raro Road Race.

“We encourage everyone to lock 16–21 September 2027 into their diaries early. “We are looking forward to making the 50th a memorable celebration of an event that has brought locals and visitors together for half a century.”
