The student-athletes of Boca Secondary School and the Finishline Sports Club made an emphatic opening statement on Day 1 of the inaugural Island Showdown at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, taking place 7–8 July 2026.
The historic meet marks the official debut of the Caribbean Secondary Schools Track and Field Competition, a dynamic, 2-day regional championship specifically designed to bring Trinidad and Tobago’s powerhouse sports institutions face-to-face with elite school delegations from across the region.
Day 1 focused entirely on individual events utilising an intensive multi-final format (A, B, and C Finals). While the top 3 finishers in each separate final earned standard medals, all individual performances were pooled across the entire division. The top 6 overall performers across these pooled metrics earn the title of “All Islanders” with the single highest-ranked performer walking away with the All Islander Champion jersey.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Ronald Charles, the Boca Secondary delegation braved the intense heat and wind variations to capture a stellar opening-day haul.
Grenada’s travelling contingent captured a total of 7 individual podium medals during the Day 1 sessions, anchored by an unmatched performance in the vertical jumps:
Demonstrating remarkable squad depth, the local contingent narrowly missed out on several more pieces of silverware, racking up an impressive seven top-eight finishes within the competitive pooled finals:
Other Notable Performances
Coach Ronald Charles underscored the strategic importance of exposing Grenada’s school athletes to international regional meets early in their developmental cycles.
“For me, it’s important to expose the athletes to outside competition,” Charles explained. “That way they get to gauge the level of competition they have to face regionally. It is also vital for them to compete in different environments; it helps them to grow holistically.”
The veteran coach expressed profound optimism regarding the team’s upward trajectory and extended deep gratitude to the parents and community partners who funded the logistical undertaking.
The battle moves to Day 2 where the attention completely shifts toward the team relay configurations starting at 11 am. Following championship rules, the Boys’ and Girls’ team points competitions remain completely separated and will never feature combined scoring. The morning sessions will host the high-stakes qualifying heats, setting the stage for a dramatic afternoon of championship finals.
The squad receives a massive tactical boost for the final day of competition as Grenada’s top Under-17 quarter-miler and middle-distance standout, Annalisa Brown, joins the lineup. Her presence heavily anchors Finishline Sports Club’s relay strategy, injecting championship-proven pace into the mid-distance events and giving the team a lethal edge in the clearing rounds.
