Athletics Cook Islands says that day one was an incredible opportunity for professional development, knowledge sharing, networking and learning from some of the leading voices in sport and high-performance coaching.

The conference featured inspiring keynote speakers, including Joanna Hayes, Olympic Gold Medallist, and Di Sheppard, sprint coach to athletes including Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout.

“Their insights, alongside discussions with experienced coaches and sporting professionals, provided valuable perspectives on athlete development, coaching excellence and the importance of creating environments where athletes can reach their full potential,” ACI states.

The day also included panel discussions with national coaches from water polo, swimming and hockey, offering opportunities to explore coaching methods and training principles that can be adapted across different sporting disciplines.

Key learning areas included; strength and conditioning, water running and alternative training methods, sprint development and performance preparation, coaching and supporting para-athletes and collaboration, mentoring and knowledge sharing

“Equally valuable were the opportunities to connect with experienced female coaches, emerging athletes and developing coaches who share a passion for strengthening the future of sport.”
ACI said William and Tuinalase play an important role in the development of Cook Islands young athletes.

“Their commitment extends beyond their own professional growth — it is about bringing new knowledge, fresh ideas and practical coaching strategies back home to support our local coaches and strengthen the development pathways available to our youth.

“Every opportunity to learn is an opportunity to improve the way we coach, inspire the next generation and create stronger foundations for our athletes to succeed — both on and off the track.

“For a small sporting nation like the Cook Islands, investing in our coaches is investing in our future.”
