The Cayman Islands’ government-owned insurance company has issued a scam warning after it was alerted to fraudulent text messages.
The Cayman Islands National Insurance Company said the SMS text message advises recipients that they can claim a refund through a bogus link embedded in the text.
But a spokeswoman for the company said, “CINICO does not send SMS text messages to its members or the general public with payment links and the website line provided in the SMS message is not a CINICO website.”
The warning came as the government relaunched its Cyber Safe campaign, aimed at helping the public identify and avoid online scams, phishing attempts and fraudsters posing as government officials.
The year-long campaign, which started on Tuesday, began with “Is it Official?”, designed to highlight fraudulent schemes that involve impersonation of government bodies, legitimate agencies and other trusted organisations.
The government said it wanted people to verify information before they acted and not to click links or download attachments until they have confirmed they are legitimate.
Officials also advised the public not to respond to messages, make payments, provide personal information or share content with other people until they were sure where the texts came from.
The CINICO spokeswoman said that anyone who gets the text message, or one similar, claiming to be from CINICO, should not click on any links and report it to the company at info@cinico.ky or by phone at 949 8101.
