CayMusicA’s 2026/27 performance season will get off to a strong start when pianist Glen Inanga and cellist Dequan Smith McConvey share the stage for a concert on Wednesday, 9 Sept. at the John Gray Memorial Church in West Bay.
Inanga, co-founder and artistic director of CayMusicA, the not-for-profit organisation that supports music and the arts in the community, said that he is looking forward to performing with Smith McConvey again – one of CayMusicA’s most accomplished alumni.
The concert will run for one hour and the duo plans to play “Five Pieces in Folk Style Op. 102” by Robert Schumann; “Suite Italienne” by Igor Stravinsky; and “Cello Sonata in A major” by César Franck.
Smith McConvey began his journey with CayMusicA when he was just 13 years old and attended a CayMusicA, then known as Cayman Arts Festival, music camp. Captivated with the cello, his musicianship grew quickly. In 2019, Smith McConvey won the Cayman “Young Musician of the Year” competition, marking a significant milestone in his musical career. Later that year, he was awarded a prestigious British Ministry of Education Music scholarship to the Wells Cathedral School, one of the UK’s five specialist music schools.
In March 2022, Smith McConvey represented the Cayman Islands as a finalist in the “Young Musician of the Caribbean” competition and has performed in Cayman several times since, including a performance with pianist Adam Heron.
Now at 23 years of age, he has completed his studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he pursued a degree in cello performance. He will begin postgraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama later this month.
Marius Gaina, executive director of CayMusicA, said, “This is our second concert at the John Gray Memorial Church in West Bay and we are very pleased to be able to offer it.
“The church has a beautiful grand piano available, and it provides a great opportunity for us to invite people in the community who may not have made it to one of our concerts in the past. Glen and Dequan are an impressive duo, and this is a concert not to be missed.”
Tickets for the one-hour concert, which starts at 6.30pm, can be purchased online or at the door. People can also bring a friend and enjoy a two-for-one deal. Student tickets are CI$15 at the door or US$20 online.
CayMusicA also offers Music at the Library each month up to June 2027, and CayMusicA’s annual Piano Festival will run from 1 to 10 Oct. 2026.
