Popular sketch comedy series “Wha Happening” is set to return “funnier than ever before” at Harquail Theatre this autumn.
Now in its fourth season, this Cayman National Cultural Foundation production promises to “take on Cayman’s quirks, contradictions, and everyday chaos with an ensemble of the island’s sharpest comedic talent – because nobody roasts Cayman quite like Caymanians”.
Writer and director Matt Brown, said, “Wha Happening” has completely spiraled out of control. It’s no longer a comedy show. The cast openly insults each other, gossips behind each other’s back and behaves in ways that should involve HR. Is Cayman society to blame? Absolutely. These Islands have produced a theatrical comedy experiment that is such a rare breed of oddity, it can only be displayed to the public once a year.”
Brown teased that “this year’s show will twist your mind into a brand-new roundabout”, saying, “Come take a seat in the legendary Harquail Theatre and experience the kind of comedy you keep hoping to find on social media, but sadly never do.”
“Wha Happening” has become a staple of island culture over the years, with its “sharp, silly, and unmistakably local” comedy mixed with music, film and live performance. The cast is made up of Michael McLaughlin, Matt Brown, Lesley-Ann Bernard, Evana Martinez, Brent McLean, Illey Moya, Arthur McTaggart, Leroy Holness and many others.
The show will take place over three weekends in September and October and like in previous years, tickets are expected to sell out.
Cassandra Shea, the cultural foundation’s head of theatre and productions, said, “There’s a reason this show keeps selling out – we know how to laugh at ourselves. That’s not a small thing. It’s a sign of a community confident enough in who it is to poke fun at it. This season, the cast brings that energy tenfold.”
