Proof of the infinite variety of theatre in Cayman can be seen in the forthcoming Cayman National Cultural Foundation production of Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Auburn’s play “Summer 1976” at the Harquail Theatre.
While the cast of “Wha Happening” has been occupying the Harquail’s main auditorium, rehearsals have been taking place in the smaller Studio Theatre for this two-hander starring Agata Kalicki and Julia Fazakerly, directed by Gavin McDougall.
Set, as the title suggests, in Ohio in the summer of 1976, this poignant and witty play explores friendship, motherhood and the unexpected connections that can shape lives.
“Agata and I worked together on a couple of productions at the Cayman Drama Society and we were hoping to do a show together,” said Fazakerly. “We found this one which is such a great show, we really love and relate to the characters in it.”
The actors and McDougall have been working on the play for around a year and are excited to be performing it over two weekends in a limited-performance run.
“It’s set in Ohio, and these two women are really different people who know each other because their daughters are friends,” said Fazakerly. “They hate each other at the start and then form an unlikely friendship.”
“It’s funny, and sad, and thought-provoking,” said Kalicki. “It has some beautiful moments, and I think it really does speak to female friendships, and it’s very relatable. We hope other people, particularly women, will relate to it, too, and we hope people will cry and laugh and go away thinking about it. That’s definitely the goal.”
