The age of the dinosaur flick remains ever present thanks to the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise continuing to rake in cash at the box office, but perhaps to the chagrin of the more puritanical segments of the audience who feels we should have left the story in a bygone era (or eon depending on how you look at it). But if trips back to Isla Nublar seem too tired at this point, then “The End of Oak Street” may be just what you need. Set in the 1980s, the Platt family are living as if it’s any other day in suburbia, until a cosmic event transports their quaint neighbourhood to a world full of dinosaurs where humans are now on the menu. Starring Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway at the head of the Platt family, ‘The End of Oak Street’ appears to be a fun, suspenseful romp that’s perfect for your summer watchlist. David Robert Mitchell is providing double-barrel action with the writing and directing in what is effectively his highest profile project since the cult classic ‘It Follows’ back in 2014. See ‘The End of Oak Street’ at Camana Bay Cinema starting 7 Aug.
In life, you have to appreciate the little things that bring you the respite you rightly deserve – be it a glass of fine wine at dusk, the company of good friends and the stories exchanged, or watching Jason Statham thrash the living daylights out of ne’er-do-wells. Such is the case this month as Statham works his perennial beat-‘em-up role in “Mutiny”. Cole Reed (Statham) is a British ex-pat on the run after he’s framed for murdering his billionaire industrialist boss, all the while attempting to bring down an international conspiracy – you know, a typical day at the office for a Statham character. French filmmaker Jean-François Richet takes on the directing with an impressive resume of action titles under his belt, including his faithful 2005 adaptation of John Carpenter’s “Assault on Precinct 13”. “Mutiny” opens 21 Aug.
I wouldn’t normally peg authoritarian dystopia as a proper setting for a romantic comedy, but “One Night Only” is evidently set to tell us that exact story. The film follows two young New Yorkers (Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner) living in a version of modern times when sex is legal for only one day a year. In a city that abhors millions of fruitless connections, these two strangers only have 24-hours to find love and make something special. Molly Ringwald, LaVar Burton, Maya Hawke and Julia Fox join the cast with director Will Gluck set to bring his usual light-hearted romcom vision from films like “Easy A” and “Friends with Benefits”. “One Night Only” premieres 21 Aug, but unlike the film’s plot, you’ll have more than just the one night to see it.
If nothing else, the release of “Project Hail Mary” earlier this year set the bar pretty high for adaptations of beloved modern sci-fi novels. But this month, the legendary Ridley Scott is trying his hand at it directing “The Dog Stars”, based on the 2012 book of the same name by Peter Heller.
Set in post-apocalyptic Colorado, a pilot named Hig (Jacob Elordi) sets out past his safe zone to investigate a strange radio signal in search of innocent survivors while trying to evade the ravaging tribe of scavengers called Reapers. Co-starring Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Allison Janney and Guy Pearce, “The Dog Stars” is set to be one of the last big action films of the summer. Make sure you catch it at Camana Bay Cinema starting 28 Aug.
