Actor Alan Ritchson has been on a tear over the few years and it seems like there’s nothing holding him back anymore, at least figuratively.
Built like a pro-wrestler standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, with biceps bigger than my head, the 43-year-old worked consistently through the 2000s, taking roles in smaller projects for film and television, even building up a quality résumé in the voice acting space. But since being cast as the new Jack Reacher for Amazon Prime’s “Reacher” series, Ritchson has become an easy pick for the main man in action hero flicks, as we’ll see in September.
In “Runner”, Ritchson plays a former soldier whose bad luck finds him as a courier transporting a lifesaving package through cartel goons and exploding vehicles. Co-starring Owen Wilson, “Runner” is one of those high-energy, fast-paced thrillers that’s over before you know it. See “Runner” at Camana Bay Cinema starting 11 Sept.
Making a sequel 30 years after the original may seem like a head-scratching decision, but I’d argue if you’re lucky enough to get the original cast back in full, then let it rip. Such is the case this month with “Practical Magic 2”. Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest all return to reprise their roles from the 1998 original, with Joey King and Maisie Williams of “Game of Thrones” fame appearing as the next generation of the Owens witches.
Much like dinosaur movies of the 1990’s, the fad of witch movies died with the decade, but 25+ years later, there’s space for more witch content, especially with Halloween right around the corner. Catch “Practical Magic 2” starting 11 Sept.
The Paul W.S. Anderson “Resident Evil” films of the early 2000s were, no doubt, proper products of their time, with Matrix-like slow-motion sequences, techno/industrial scores and loads of Milla Jovovich. They were entertaining in their own right, but definitely a letdown to fans of the original source material because they were faithful to Capcom’s Resident Evil video games in name only. But this month, director Zach Cregger, a self-proclaimed major fan of the video games, aims to do it right this time. Coming off two of the most talked-about horror movies this decade in “Barbarian” and “Weapons”, Cregger brings us a tale of a regular guy caught at the wrong place at the wrong time during a zombie outbreak. “Resident Evil” opens on 18 Sept.
Brad Pitt works at the direction of David Ayer for the first time since 2014’s “Fury” this month in “Heart of the Beast”.
Pitt plays a Special Forces officer who takes his battled-scarred combat dog along for a plane ride over the Alaskan wilderness when a crash-landing leaves them both fighting for survival across the unforgiving terrain.
Ayer pulls from his experiences as a submarine sonar technician while serving in the United States Navy, giving his military pictures a true sense of realism and reverence. See “Heart of the Beast” starting 25 Sept.
After a quarter century, Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy still serves as one of cinema’s greatest achievements.
No adaption of J.R.R. Tolkien’s tomes was going to be perfect, but boy, did Jackson get close with the sheer scale of these productions.
Whether you’ve never seen ‘LOTR’ or you’ve seen each film at least 10 times as I have, you’d be remiss not to catch any of the films on the big screen in the next months as all three films – “Fellowship of the Ring”, “Two Towers” and “Return of the King” will each show twice as part of Camana Bay Cinema’s Classics at the Cinema programming.
See Fellowship 15 Sept. and 22 Sept., Towers on 22 Sept. and 29 Sept. and Return on 29 Sept. and 6 Oct.
