If a children’s theatrical production was rated purely on a witch’s cackle or a dragon’s roar, then Cayman Drama Society’s “Room on the Broom” absolutely smashed it out of the park.
Michelle Lawrus’s witch has the best cackle since “The Wizard of Oz” (but not as scary) and the dramatic entrance of Mike Harrington’s fiery dragon made children and adults alike jump with excitement.
This is an ensemble piece though and all parts of this thoroughly entertaining show are played to perfection, from Maria Markland’s petulant feline to the appropriately-squawky bird from Calum Walsh O’Brien.
The music and lighting are crucial parts of this production and are used with maximum creativity, transporting the mystical menagerie from inside a witch’s den to flying high in a moonlight sky in an instant.
Reshma Sharma’s narrator keeps the plot from “Room on the Broom” author Julia Donaldson moving along at a cracking – or should that be cackling – pace and children of all ages will find something to entertain them in this 30-minute show.
The drama isn’t confined to the stage though, with the action frequently spilling out into the seats. Even the foyer at Prospect Playhouse has been transformed into a magic den, with a dragon’s cave, levitating witch’s hat, book of spells, magical drinks and potion’s corner, with the cast and crew available afterward for pictures.
First-time director Emily Harris has created a magical gem and for people who can’t get to Prospect, the show flies off around the island to East End and West Bay before heading to Cayman Brac, a CDS first.
Tickets for the performances at the Prospect Playhouse are available from the Cayman Drama Society’s website at www.cds.ky.
