A 65-year-old man and a 7-year-old girl have died in an incident now under investigation by police.
The man has been identified as Elvis Green, a well-known member of the East End community.
Emergency services rushed to a home on Broadleaf Close in East End today after the alarm was raised at about 7am.
Green and the child were given CPR before they were taken to the Anthony S. Eden Hospital, along with two other children found in the house.
Green and the 7-year-old girl, however, were later pronounced dead by doctors.
The condition of the two other children, both girls, was said by police to be “stable” in hospital after treatment.
The news sparked a string of tributes and the school the three children attended, East End Primary, suspended classes for the day.
A statement issued on behalf of the government said it was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two lives.”
It added, “We extend our heartfelt condolences to their family, loved ones and all the East End community.
“Our thoughts are also with the two children who are being treated and monitored at a local hospital and we pray for their full recovery.”
The Ministry of Education said the decision to suspend teaching had been made “out of respect, and to give students, staff and families time to come together and support one another.”
Parents and guardians were asked to collect their children from school and those who normally travel by bus left by a special service at 11.30am.
The ministry said that children who could not be met at their usual bus drop-off point would be returned to the school and looked after until they could be collected.
It added, “Members of the Parent Teacher Association will be on site to care for and support students whose parents and guardians are unable to collect them right away.”
The ministry said counselling staff would also be made available to support pupils and staff over the next few days.
Officials added, “The ministry and department ask that the privacy of the families be respected at this difficult time and that the public refrain from speculation, including on social media.”
Police said inquiries into the incident continued.
This is a developing story that will be updated as additional information is obtained.
