Are you able to manage staff schedules and garden maintenance, organise galas for 500 guests and cook breakfast the next morning? If so, there might be the perfect job for you.

The Governor’s Office is advertising for a new residence manager at Government House, the official home of Governor Jane Owen, and is looking for candidates with “outstanding hospitality, organisational and team management skills”.

The residence manager is responsible for the day-to-day running of Government House and estate, making it a key role in the governor’s household.

According to the job advert, shared by Owen on social media, the successful candidate will oversee staff, hospitality events, suppliers, maintenance, budgets, inventory and guest-facing services, ensuring Government House is safe, clean, well maintained, professionally run and prepared for official and private requirements.

Government House serves both as the governor’s official residence and as a venue supporting the work of the Governor’s Office and Cayman Islands government, welcoming more than 7,000 guests every year and hosting official breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions and visits involving members of the British Royal Family, dignitaries and government representatives.

The residence manager reports to the executive manager and will assist with managing Government House’s $1 million annual budget. In addition to managing staff at the official residence on Seven Mile Beach, the residence manager will play a major role in the governor’s packed diplomatic schedule, including breakfasts, lunches, dinners, receptions, official functions and major events such as the annual King’s Birthday Party with around 500-600 guests.

The successful applicant will be expected to take a hands-on approach to the role, including serving lunches and dinners and even preparing breakfast for the governor and any house guests when needed. The job description includes supporting the housekeeper with cleaning as required, supervising the gardeners and checking on the irrigation system, arranging Christmas decorations and managing the day-to-day and weekly budgets.

While the position is a 40-hour-a-week job, the holder must be flexible enough to step up in the case of emergencies or unforeseen operational issues, helping to coordinate timely responses and appropriate solutions when required and be on call 24/7 for anything happening on Government House premises. The advertised salary range is $52,296-$70,344 and is not a live-in position.

Aspiring residence managers will need to have a host of skills and qualifications, including a degree in hospitality management or other business-related qualification or a vocational training/certificate. Candidates must also have at least two years of management experience, preferably in a hospitality environment, with responsibility for staff, support services, event planning and coordination and strong planning, organisational and communication skills.

As befits such a high-profile establishment, discretion, honesty and self-discipline are also key.
