The Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has donated 100 large umbrellas to traders affected by the ongoing reconstruction of the Bekwai Market to provide temporary shelter during the construction works.
In a Facebook post on Monday, October 19, Mr Poku-Adusei said the donation fulfilled a pledge he had made to the traders, many of whom have been affected by the redevelopment of the market.
The umbrellas are intended to protect the traders from the sun and rain as they continue their businesses while work on the market progresses.
Mr Poku-Adusei said the traders welcomed his team during the presentation despite the heavy rain, describing their commitment to their businesses and families as a motivation for the intervention.
“These are women who wake up at dawn to feed families, to educate children, to keep the Bekwai economy alive. How can we leave them at the mercy of the weather? We cannot,” he said.
The MP reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the market women, whom he described as the backbone of Bekwai, as they navigate the challenges associated with the reconstruction.
The donation follows concerns raised by traders affected by the market redevelopment. In September, Mr Poku-Adusei said he would engage municipal authorities over their circumstances, including the need for temporary shelter and safe trading spaces during construction.
