To strengthen young people’s understanding of governance, development, and their role in Namibia’s future, the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) National Secretariat, supported by GIZ Namibia and in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture (MEIYSAC), has commenced a national high school programme.
The programme, which will run from 14 September to 10 October 2026, is taking the African Union Agenda 2063 on the Africa We Want and the United Nations Agenda 2030 on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) directly to high school learners.
The programme is being implemented through school engagements across Namibia, targeting learners in Grades 8 to 12, as well as school management and teachers.
The engagements provide learners with an opportunity to understand the APRM’s mandate and how governance and development issues affect their communities and their future. The APRM also released the Targeted Review Report on Youth Unemployment for the Republic of Namibia and Progress.
Alfons Witbeen, Director of Operations of the APRM National Secretariat, has stressed the importance of the programme, which directly benefits the youth.
“Young people are the largest stakeholder in Namibia’s development, and their participation requires support and opportunities for engagement,” he said.
The programme also includes presentations by MEIYSAC on youth initiatives and opportunities, including training and skills development, enabling learners to access information on available government programmes and opportunities. The GIZ component focuses on the SDGs and their relevance to young people and communities.
The APRM National Secretariat, GIZ Namibia and MEIYSAC will continue the engagements through the scheduled programme until 10 October 2026, with the objective of strengthening awareness among young people.
