This is the Ministry for Agriculture’s message in marking International Plant Health Day today- May 12.
With the theme, ‘Plant Biosecurity for Food Security and Nutrition,’ Secretary for Agriculture Temarama Anguna-Kamana says it highlights the importance of protecting our plants and agricultural systems from harmful pests and diseases.
“Plant biosecurity is everyone’s responsibility.”
“Farmers and growers play a critical role by maintaining good farm hygiene practices, monitoring crops regularly and reporting any suspicious signs early.”
She said, “As we observe International Plant Health Day, we are reminded that healthy plants are essential to our food security, nutrition, environment and economy.”
“Farmers, growers, importers, travellers, and the wider community all have an important role to play in helping protect the Cook Islands from invasive pests and diseases that could threaten our crops, livelihoods, and natural environment.”
The public can support plant health by:
• Avoid bringing plants, fruits, vegetables, tubers, seeds and soil into the country while travelling, as these may carry hidden pests and diseases.
• Being mindful when purchasing plants and plant products online and ensuring all import requirements are met, including phytosanitary certification where required.
• Reporting any unusual pests, insects, or plant diseases to the Ministry of Agriculture or Biosecurity Division.
She said early detection and reporting are key to preventing the spread of harmful pests and diseases.
“The Ministry continues to advocate and strengthen plant biosecurity through surveillance programmes, border inspections, public awareness initiatives, training and collaboration with regional and international partners.
“These efforts help protect our local crops, biodiversity and future food security. “On this International Plant Health Day and for every year thereafter, we all need to continue to work together to protect the health of our plants, our people and our islands for future generations,” she added.
