The machinery was provided through a grant from the Government of Japan under its Economic and Social Development Programme for the 2024 financial year, approved by Cabinet in November 2024.
Although the excavator arrived last month, its release was delayed while Te Pae Tanu Ministry of Agriculture waited for spare parts, carried out necessary checks and finalised documentation with suppliers.
The programme aims to support the Cook Islands’ agriculture sector through sustainable socio-economic development, improved food security and increased agricultural productivity.
As the implementing agency, Te Pae Tanu worked with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management’s Development Coordination Division to finalise a priority list of machinery and equipment for purchase under the programme.
Secretary for Agriculture Temarama Anguna-Kamana said the excavator was the first equipment delivered through the project.
With the Minister of Agriculture’s endorsement, the Ministry allocated the excavator to the Ngatangiia Growers Association to assist members with their farming activities.
Services provided by the machinery are also expected to extend to other communities in Takitumu, allowing more farmers to benefit.
Anguna-Kamana acknowledged the support of the government and people of Japan, as well as the Cook Islands government, in helping farmers increase food production.
“We acknowledge the Government and people of Japan for this support to our country and agriculture sector, and also our Government for recognising the efforts of our farmers and how else we can support,” she said.
