The Namibia Agricultural and Livestock Agency (Nala), in partnership with Mathuba Genetics Academy, has concluded its first agricultural training programme at Windhoek and Helao Nafidi last week.

136 farmers, agricultural practitioners, community members and other stakeholders took part.

The training was facilitated by South African livestock breeding specialist and Mathuba Genetic Academy founder Emmanuel Mudau in collaboration with Nala, and it was aimed at equipping farmers with knowledge on livestock genetics, breeding, animal health and commercial farming.

The programme focused on strengthening agricultural knowledge and practical skills as part of efforts to support the development of Namibia’s agricultural sector.

Nala Chief Executive Officer Shitaleni Shileka said the training was aimed at equipping farmers and other stakeholders with practical knowledge that can contribute to improved agricultural production.

“This initiative forms part of Nala’s broader commitment to empowering farmers, transforming agriculture, and building Namibia through practical training, innovation, and sustainable agricultural development,” Shileka said.

During the programme, Nala also honoured several individuals with Nala awards for their contributions to the country and their communities.

Those recognised included Ohamba yaUukwanyama Meekulu Mwadinomho Yakristian yaNelumbu, Omukwaniilwa Shuumbwa Nangolo of the Ondonga Traditional Authority and former Ohangwena regional governor Usko Nghaamwa.

According to Shileka, the awards recognise individuals who have demonstrated leadership, community service and commitment to Namibia’s development.

Nala and Mathuba Genetics Academy are expected to continue their collaboration, with another practical agricultural training programme planned before the end of the year. The upcoming programme is expected to be held in the Oshikoto, Omusati and Ohangwena regions.

Nala said the continued partnership forms part of its efforts to empower farmers through skills development and knowledge sharing, with the broader objective of strengthening Namibia’s agricultural sector.
