In an effort to strengthen food security, this year’s World Food Day theme is focused on improving agricultural productivity, promoting sustainable food systems and to encourage innovation that supports resilient livelihoods in the Cook Islands.

The annual event to be held at Te Tapora Kai on October 16 from 9am to 3pm provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the critical role of innovation in transforming agri-food systems.

Secretary of Agriculture Temarama Anguna-Kamana said: “The World Food Day event provides the opportunity to raise awareness in communities, schools, and among farmers and agricultural stakeholders about the critical role of innovation in transforming agri-food systems.”

“We aim to showcase innovative agricultural practices, promote healthy and nutritious local food consumption, engage youth in agriculture, and foster collaboration among stakeholders working towards sustainable food security.”

This year’s theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow” reflects the Ministry’s goals to improve agricultural productivity, promote sustainable food systems and encourage innovation that supports resilient livelihoods in the Cook Islands.

Expressions of interest for vendors to register a stall on the day have been released.

Persons who are interested are invited to call the Ministry on 28711 or email moa.support@cookislands.gov.ck  and have until the first week of October to register.

Anguna-Kamana said she is looking forward to a multitude of visitors attending the popular event to learn and purchase produce and products from the vendors.

“We invite the public to experience the World Food Day celebration as well as the 30-year anniversary of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) Subregional Office for the Pacific (Samoa).”

The agricultural exhibitions will showcase innovative technology such as the biogas initiative, feature a school colouring and poster competition focused on innovative technology and practices contributing to food security and nutrition, and the Chef’s Association will be promoting local food production and healthy diets.
