Police deployed pepper spray as a “public order measure” during a fight at a liquor license premises in George Town.
In a press release issued on 14 Sept., police said that they responded to a report of a fight shortly after 2.30am on 12 Sept.
“On arrival, officers observed a large crowd gathered in the parking lot and causing a disturbance. They also observed a man armed with a machete chasing another man who appeared to have sustained an injury,” the release stated.
Police said they took immediate action to “de-escalate the situation by verbal commands”, but the parties involved failed to comply and “as a result, pepper spray was deployed as a public order measure”.
The two men involved in the incident fled the location, leaving machetes behind. Officers subsequently dispersed the crowd and recovered the machetes.
“One individual who was affected by the deployment of the pepper spray was medically assessed and decontaminated at the scene. Another individual who also reported being affected left the location in a private vehicle,” the release added.
The incident remains under investigation.
Police are appealing to anyone who may have photos, videos or other information relating to the incident to submit them directly to the RCIPS Confidential Tip Line at 949-7777, or via the police website.
